Why allow current practices in Atlantic salmon open net- cage salmon farming?
•Short term economics / job opportunities
Concerns / risks to the ecosystem?
•Devastation to the ecosystem and to the culture of First Nations and other coastal communities as wild salmon are a keystone species.
•Use of pesticides; “arms race” as lice become resistant. Current bio-cide is “Slice”
•Parasites (sea lice transmission to pink and chum salmon smolts)
•Marine mammal entanglement
•Use of high power lights = pit lamping
•Introduction of an exotic species / escapement
•Disease transmission = e.g. infectious hematopoietic necrosis (IHN) and infectious salmon anemia (ISA)
•Antibiotics (contributes to antibiotic resistance)
•High saturated fats (containing fat soluble toxins)
•Net loss of protein (min 3 kg of small feed fish to make 1 kg salmon)
•Privatization of our waterways? May 2008.
•Use of copper on netting
•Acoustic harassment devices (AHDs - used historically)
